How to Use Lottery Statistics in Lucky for Life

We hope you take this information with a grain of salt. Every number has an equal probability of being drawn. Just because specific numbers have come up more often (or less) in the past, it doesn’t mean it will continue to be this way. However, there is a whole area of mathematics revolving around lottery statistics.

Using the Lucky for Life most drawn numbers and probability theory, you can try to predict what numbers will be drawn. Probability theory looks a little something like this:

In Lucky for Life, there are 48 main balls. The first ball has a 1 in 48 chance of being predicted. Since numbers aren’t duplicated, the second ball drawn has a 1 in 47 chance of being predicted. The third ball has a 1 in 46 chance of being predicted, and so on until all five balls have been drawn. The math gets more complex than this, but more on that shortly! As a reminder, despite what the math might try to tell us, each number has an equal probability of being drawn in a single game.

Understanding Lucky for Life Odds

When you look at the odds of winning the jackpot for games such as Mega Millions at 1 in 302 million, the odds can seem overwhelming. But how do they come up with numbers like those or the Lucky for Life odds of winning the jackpot of 1 in 30 million?

Let’s do a little more math:

To find the odds of winning Lucky for Life, divide the number of winning numbers needed (in this case, six total) by the total number of possible lottery numbers. This formula will help:

In this formula, “n” stands for the total number of possible numbers (in Lucky for Life, that would be 48), and “r” is the number of numbers chosen. The “!” denotes a factorial where “n” is the number drawn times the next lower number times the next lower number until 0 is reached. As an example, let’s say the number is 4. The factorial would be 4x3x2x1.

So, in the case of Lucky for Life, “n” would be replaced by 48, and “r” would be the number drawn. Let’s use three as an example. Everywhere we see the “!” means we need to multiply. So, the top number (which is 48) would be 48x47x46 until we reach 0. The bottom numbers would be 5x4x3x2x1 (this represents how many numbers you need to select from the group of 48). Then you continue multiplying starting with the number drawn, which was three, so in all our denominator (or bottom number looks like this) 5x4x3x2x1x3x2x1.

We won’t go into all of the math. We just wanted to give you an idea of how the Lucky for Life odds are determined so you know there is actual math behind these odds.
