Florida Lottery’s Pick 5 is a draw game that happens twice daily. If you have participated in the Powerball, you already know the basics behind picking numbers for Pick 5!
What is Florida Pick 5? A Quick Overview
Pick five numbers, and select your bet type (straight, box or combination straight/box). Choose how much you want to wager on your ticket (wagers range from $0.50 to $1), and you’re ready to go!
For added excitement, add the optional FIREBALL to your ticket. FIREBALL doubles your ticket price but gives you more ways to win. The FIREBALL replaces one of the winning numbers to create more winning combinations.
How to Play Pick 5 Florida Lottery: Step-by-Step Guide
Three wager types create countless ways to win a prize, including the straight, box and a straight/box combination (only available with a $1 wager type and FIREBALL).
With each box bet type, the number combinations go round-robin to create different combinations. For example, you play a five-way box, and your numbers are 3,3,3,3,4. Your possible combinations are:
-
3,3,3,3,4
-
3,3,3,4,3
-
3,3,4,3,3
-
3,4,3,3,3
-
4,3,3,3,3
See how the number four rotated through the number combinations? Let’s get into specifics:
Straight
Straight is the most straightforward wager type. Unlike Powerball and Mega Millions, where the number order doesn’t matter, the numbers drawn must match exactly, in order, the numbers you selected on your ticket.
5-Way Box
Pick four of the same number and one different number, creating five possible number combinations.
10-Way Box
Pick three repeating digits and two identical numbers. For example, 4,4,4,7,7.
20-Way Box
Choose three repeating numbers and two unique numbers. For example, 1,1,1,6,9.
30-Way Box
Pick two pairs of numbers along with one unique number. For example, 3,3,6,6,7.
60-Way Box
With this number combination, you want to select one number twice and three unique numbers. An example would be 2,2,4,5,6.
120-Way Box
This number combination requires five unique numbers to be chosen. For example, 2,3,5,7,8.
When you add on FIREBALL, you can select one of the straight/box combination wager types. With this wager type, you win if your numbers are drawn in the exact order you have on your ticket or with any of the box formats listed above. Remember, the FIREBALL replaces one of the winning numbers, giving you more ways to play and more chances to win.

Common Strategies for Picking Numbers in Florida Pick 5
-
Strategies people use to pick their number combinations.
-
Wheeling strategy
-
Going random
-
Use your name
he lottery is a game of chance, but trying different strategies can be fun. A popular strategy is choosing randomly. Don’t think about it. Just do it!
Another strategy is a wheeling strategy. Pick eight numbers and create patterns using them. Start with the first five numbers in your list. Replace the fifth number with the sixth, keeping the first four the same. Then, replace the last number with the seventh and follow that with the eighth number. Drop the fourth number and start again. Continue replacing different numbers until you have replaced each number from your initial five. You will end up with a large group of numbers to play with.
You can also use your name as an additional method. Each letter of your name corresponds to a number. See the chart below:
LOTTERY NUMBER |
LETTERS IN YOUR NAME |
1 |
AJS |
2 |
BKT |
3 |
CLU |
4 |
DMV |
5 |
ENW |
6 |
FOX |
7 |
GPY |
8 |
HQZ |
9 |
IR |
There are multiple ways to combine the numbers corresponding to these letters to generate your lottery numbers. For example, if your name is Caleb, you get the numbers 3, 1, 3, 5 and 2. For Pick 5, these numbers correspond to each column, resulting in a 20-way box wager type.
