What is New Jersey Lottery FIREBALL?
FIREBALL is an add-on feature for the NJ daily games Pick-3 and Pick-4. The FIREBALL number is drawn after every Pick-3 and Pick-4 drawing, and can be used to replace any winning number. You'll get MORE chances to create winning number combinations—with special prizes!
How FIREBALL Works

Choose your Pick-3 or Pick-4 numbers, your wager amount, and wager type. Just like always.

Add FIREBALL to your ticket. Adding FIREBALL doubles the cost of your play. So if you wager $1, your ticket with FIREBALL will cost $2.

After each Pick-3 and Pick-4 drawing, the NJ Lottery will draw one Pick-3 FIREBALL number and one Pick-4 FIREBALL number from 0 to 9.

Replace any of the winning Pick-3 or Pick-4 numbers drawn with the FIREBALL number to create FIREBALL prize winning combinations.

If your numbers match any of the FIREBALL prize winning combinations, you win a prize!
Here’s an Example:
Your Pick-3 numbers are: 1-2-4 straight order
The winning Pick-3 numbers are: 1-2-3 with FIREBALL 4
Replace any winning number drawn with the FIREBALL number to make these new combinations:
4-2-3
1-4-3
1-2-4
Ding ding ding! You win a FIREBALL prize because your Pick-3 numbers (1-2-4 straight) match one of the FIREBALL prize winning combinations. Good 4 you!
FIREBALL prizes
With FIREBALL from the New Jersey lottery, prizes are based on your wager type ("Straight" or "Box") and wager amount. You can win a prize in the base Pick-3 or Pick-4 game and win a FIREBALL prize. Never played before? Here’s what you need to know
Pick 3 and Pick 4 are games that are drawn twice daily, once at midday and once in the evening.
First, you will choose three numbers between zero and nine. Then, you’ll decide on your wager type, straight, box, or a combination (don’t worry, we’ll get to that next), and choose whether to add the New Jersey lottery’s FIREBALL for the chance at additional prizes.
Straight. Box. HUH?
When you select your bet type, it’s important to know how the number combinations work, as this will impact your bet type. Wagers range from $0.50 to $5. Let’s go through each of the different bet types to turn you into a Pick 3 or Pick 4 expert.
Straight
The straight bet type is simple. You select your three (or four) numbers for Pick 3 or Pick 4, which must be drawn in the exact order that you selected on your ticket. For example, if you choose 1, 6, 2. These three numbers must be drawn in the same order for you to be a winner.
Box
The box combinations available will depend on whether you participate in Pick 3 or Pick 4. For Pick 3, you can choose from a 3-way box or a 6-way box. For Pick 4, the options include a 4-way box, a 6-way box, a 12-way box, or a 24-way box.
3-way box
For Pick 3, you choose your three numbers, but two must be identical (i.e., 1,1,2). You then can create number combinations by rotating the numbers, like this: 1,1,2, 1,2,1 or 2,1,1
4-way box
For Pick 4, three numbers must be identical (e.g., 2,2,2,7). Rotate the numbers just like above, except you end up with four combinations of numbers.
6-way box
To create a 6-way box for Pick 3, select three unique numbers, such as 2,4,6. The same rotation as above applies, creating six opportunities to win.
For Pick 4, you must select two pairs of identical numbers (e.g. 33,77). Following the same rotation gives you six possible combinations.
12-way box
This option is available for Pick 4 only and works like this: Select four numbers with two identical digits and two different digits (i.e. 4,4,7,9). Then, create the same rotation to create 12 possible number combinations.
24-way box
Another Pick 4 bet type requires you to pick four unique numbers (e.g., 2,4,6.8. Rotate these numbers like before to come up with 24 possible winning combinations.
Straight/Box Combination
Participate in two games in one with a minimum $1 wager and select the straight/box combination. If your numbers are drawn in the same order as on your ticket, win the straight prize if your numbers match any of your combinations. If you don’t win the straight prize, you still have a chance at the box prize for the bet type chosen.
Wheel
This is a convenient way to use all possible straight combinations with the numbers chosen. The requirements for picking numbers are the same as for the box bet types above, except with Wheel, the numbers must be drawn in the exact order to win. This is the same as with a straight bet.
Pairs
Pair bets only let you select one or two numbers. To win, you must choose a front pair (your first two numbers must be 1,2) or a back pair (your last two numbers must be 2,3) to win. With Pick 3, your front pair numbers could be 1,2,7, or your back pair numbers could be 7,2,3. With Pick 4, your front pair could be 1,2,5,9, or your back pair could be 7,4,2,3. Pick 3 also offers a split pair where you use the 1 first and the 3 last and get to pick the number in the middle (i.e., 1,8,3).
Rules of the game
As we’ve seen, Pick 3 or Pick 4, along with the New Jersey lottery’s FIREBALL add-on, is pretty simple. Pick your numbers on the day and time you want (for the midday or evening game), choose your wager amount, pick your bet type, and you're ready to join in the fun!
